Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a substance that is naturally found in our body. By far the largest amount occurs in our skin. Over time, the level of hyaluronic acid in our body decreases, which is why aesthetic medicine makes it possible to replenish its deficiency, through hyaluronic acid filling procedures.
What is hyaluronic acid and how does it help to eliminate wrinkles?
Hyaluronic acid is glucosinoglycan, which binds water in the skin and is responsible for its proper hydration. In aesthetic medicine, 2 main types of hyaluronic acid are used – cross-linked and non-cross-linked. Non-cross-linked hyaluronic acid is used to moisturize the skin. It persists in the tissue from a few days to about a month. It is administered deep into the skin with a thin and short needle in the form of punctures after previous application of an anesthetic cream.
On the other hand, a cross-linked hyaluronic acid is a typical filler. The time with which it persists in the tissue depends on the degree of its contact, the place of administration and the individual characteristics of the patient. The more cross-linked hyaluronic acid is, the longer it stays in the tissue, while the effects of hyaluronic acid filling persist for an average period of 6 to 18 months.
Hyaluronic acid can be administered virtually in any area of the body, but most often the treatments concern the face, in particular the cheeks, lips and nasal furrows.
What is the treatment for removing wrinkles with hyaluronic acid?
Hyaluronic acid treatment is not complicated, but for your safety we always precede it with a thorough medical consultation. In the first stage, a preparation with anesthesia is applied to the treatment area – most often in the form of a cream. Sometimes, in patients with a low pain threshold, the doctor decides to use a stronger remedy similar to anesthesia used in dentistry.
Hyaluronic acid filling procedure consists of injection deep into the epidermis.
Hyaluronic acid has an elastic, very plastic and crystalline form of a gel that replenishes the places where there are wrinkles or furrows or where there is no volume.
Hyaluronic acid can be administered with a needle or micro-cannula depending on the area and indications of therapy. The micro-canula is a bluntly terminated needle that slips in the tissue, which, reduces the risk of bruising, hematomas after surgery and minimizes damage to blood vessels. Hyaluronic acid can be administered in many different ways – linearly along the wrinkle line, in the form of deposits that fill the collapsed tissue or as hyaluronic threads aimed at tensioning and lifting the skin.
The effect of filling with hyaluronic acid is to eliminate its deficiency. There is an improvement in the process of binding water in the cells, and consequently, an improvement in the volume of the skin in places where sagging occurred.
Excellent moisturizing and modeling effects are achieved by filling the lips with hyaluronic acid.
When hyaluronic acid is used that is not cross-linked, the effect is primarily to moisturize the skin.
Hyaluronic acid, on the other hand, is excellent for modeling the face, nose or cheekbones.
Hyaluronic acid treatments primarily restore elasticity, firmness, moisturize the skin and visibly reduce wrinkles. The presence of hyaluronic acid is extremely important, as it is responsible for the proper water management of our skin.
The use of hyaluronic acid in therapy is justified in the case of scarring (e.g. post-operative), filling cavies in the skin.
Time of filling and modeling with hyaluronic acid
The procedure lasts from 30 to 90 minutes depending on the area.
Duration of effects after hyaluronic acid treatment
The durability of filling or modelling effects with hyaluronic acid depends on several factors. Hyaluronic acid – as a natural substance it is spontaneously removed by the body. Therefore, the results obtained usually last from 6 to 12 months, and in some cases up to 18 months. The duration of the effects of hyaluronic acid surgery depend on genetic conditions, lifestyle, diet or place on the body where the deficiencies are replenished.
Hyaluronic acid filling procedure, especially when micro-cannula is performed, is safe and minimally invasive enough that it does not require recovery. The patient can basically immediately return to normal activity, and the effects of the procedure are visible immediately. Sometimes there may be a slight local swelling, which lasts no more than 2 days. The final effect of hyaluronic acid filling surgery is visible after 2 weeks when the gel binds water and lays out in the tissues. During this time, the patient should drink more fluids and avoid sauna and sun beds.
As we mentioned earlier, hyaluronic acid treatments are safe and accessible to a wide range of patients, however, as with any aesthetic medicine treatment, there are some specific contraindications:
- autoimmune diseases
- pregnancy
- breastfeeding
- propensity to form hypertrophic scars
- inflammation of the skin (herpes, acne)
- hypersensitivity to hyaluronic acid
The presented description of the modeling procedure or filling with hyaluronic acid is of a general nature and does not constitute medical information. The basis for the treatment with hyaluronic acid for the maximum safety of the patient is always an individual consultation.
